Obverse

The obverse of the button-shaped coin features a circle. The year 1999 is placed between two holes in the centre of the circle. The inscription LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA (Republic of Latvia), and the numeral 1 and inscription LATS, each arranged in a semicircle, are respectively placed above and beneath the central motif. The two inscriptions are separated by stars.

Reverse

The reverse of the button-shaped coin is designed by applying matting. The central circle with two holes is polished, the outer ring is matted with an ornamental band. The inscription MILLENNIUM and the year 2000, each arranged in a semicircle, are placed in the upper and lower part of the coin, respectively.

As the turn of the millennium approaches, our minds tend to linger on the past, our senses are roused by the future, and our bodies are ever so keenly aware of being alive here and now. We are preoccupied with the paradoxes of time and time-keeping systems, seeking answers to the questions they pose and unsolved mysteries they contain.

The six billion earthlings will be heir not only to the miracles of genetic engineering and information highways, but also to the bloody legacy of the Holocaust, Soviet Gulags and Pol Pot.

As much as we would desire to step into the new millennium pure and guiltless, we are but a button held fast to the coat of our past.
